Sneaking up on your stash
Does your yarn spark joy? Are there yarn monsters lurking in there?
Just to remind you I am Linda Hartley. I am a life long knitter, a wool whisperer, a lover of good yarn and like most knitters, possibly like you, I have a lot of yarn. I’m not ashamed of that and I don’t think you should be either!
In fact over the last two years it has been a great comfort to me.
For a long time I had a love/hate relationship with my yarn stash. I’ve learned some good habits to turn it from a nightmarish hoard into a genuinely useful resource that I can use to support my creativity.
Hopefully some of what I’ve learned can help you to do the same.
I’m not a fan of the purge approach to anything, let alone using it on my precious stash. I think it is a bit like dieting. You can do it for a while but it tends to be an ‘all or nothing’ thing and as soon as you fall off the wagon you quickly relapse into ‘treating’ yourself. It promises so much and often fails to deliver.
So let’s get away from the binge/purge cycle and remember that when we bought most of this yarn we were in love with its potential. I am not Mari Kondo but I do like the idea of yarn ‘sparking joy’. If it doesn’t then, and only then, it might be time to thank it and let it go on its way to spark someone else’s creativity.
I would never tell you to pull all your stash out at once. I’m easily overwhelmed and past experience suggest this can lead to an unusable mess that I tend to hide from or stuff out of sight as quickly as possible. We are going to take a much kinder, more sustainable approach to our yarn stash and what may lurk there.
